Millions of animals globally endure long journeys and face many dangers in sometimes awful conditions. Incidents such as fire and capsized ships mean the dangers are fatal. It is inconceivable that humans would be transported without plan to support them should the worst happen. This doesn’t happen with livestock.
In the twentieth century there is no reason to transport live animals. The wonders of modern science means that embryos and semen can be transported safely and at speed. In farming this is now common practice.
Livestock should only ever be exported on the hook and never on the hoof. Welfare must always be paramount. Welfare standards vary greatly internationally and exported cattle can be travelling to areas of very low welfare. During long journeys animals become stressed, they dehydrate during long transit, faulty water feeders can't cope with the demand of high temperatures and even import procedure systems can see many animals die in transit.
Animals crammed into vehicles can be trampled with injuries ranging from open wounds to death.
Foot and mouth, blue tongue virus, swine fever and avian influenza have all been spread by live transport.
Over 206,169 animals drowned at sea in the last 30 years .
